Under the regulatory regime for Financial Advisers Act, churning of investment products is illegal unless the financial adviser can show it is beneficial that the new product to be bought and that any financial lost is justified. But does anyone know that churning is officially allow when comes to stock? |

Last Sunday in Sunday Times there was an article which painted a rather negative picture about some "investment seminars" that turn out to be not so great. After attending a preview, audiences have to pay a hefty seminar fee to attend the "real" seminar which itself is nothing great because it does not necessarily produced good results. However, I observed that there are so call investment seminars that are organized by more reputable organizations that are also doing a bad job. |

Participating insurance policies (e.g. endowment and whole life) declare annual bonuses. Once declared, it is guaranteed. Many (but not all) par products have terminal bonus as well. Terminal bonuses are not guaranteed and is expressed as a percentage of already declared bonus. Terminal bonus will only be declared on maturity or upon claim or surrender. |

A Singaporean who is a non-resident non-US Citizen and invests in US assets like ETFs are subjected to US government estate duty. This is often overlooked. I have talk to many individuals and they were not aware of it. Sometime they just ask their broker to buy XYZ stocks or ETFs listed on the US stock exchange but they are not advised that they should use a tax shelter instrument to do that. |
