Dementia is not a natural part of aging. But it certainly causes a person to lack mental capacity. All financial planning cases now includes the provision to hedge against this risk under the broad subject of Estate Planning. You can read more details here: Advanced Estate Planning. My mum had a stroke due to her apnocea (blockage of the air passage during her sleep), and the result was dementia (her brain cells had been damaged). The condition deteriorates very fast, and it is frightening.
I urge all to make that financial planning to hedge against this risk. Dementia after all may not be just due to diseased brain but also a result of strokes.
