When examining the performance of unit trusts, it is important to see whether could the fund manager do better than its own benchmark. The benchmark is usually the relevant market's performance. It has long be observed that most active managed funds do not do better than its benchmark and hence they are a poor performer. It is best to avoid active managed funds altogether. More readings:
