A "hot fund" or a "hype" or a "favor" of the month refers to the aggressive marketing compaign to promote a product or a theme. This can be any financial products but it tends to be towards investment related products. All banks, securities house, financial advisers, etc are guilty of pushing the "favor of the month." The aggressive marketing campaign is usually done after an investment fund or market sector had done very well recently. The marketing campaign tends to play greed of the investors because large recent returns of the investment. Because of the tendency to push "hot fund" when the fund has made large recent gains, it means investors are buying such fund at an expensive level. Hence, investors often will find themselves losing a lot of money after they bought such hot fund. It is best to stay away from firms and financial advisers that tend to push such hot funds.
